Default Air Force Logo Summer safety
I know. You’re probably thinking something like, “Oh, great. Another summer safety brief. Bo-ring. I’ll just skip on by and see if there’s anything else worth reading in the paper.” Right? Come on, admit it…you know you don’t want to hear, again, about all the things you need to do to be safe this summer. “I get it”, you say to yourself as you audibly roll your eyes. “I’ll wear my seatbelt, hydrate, use sunscreen and won’t drink and drive. Boom. Just gave myself a safety brief.”

Default Air Force Logo Parents: Do you know where your children are?
One of my favorite aspects of this time of year is being able to enjoy being outside. The weather is getting warm, we all start seeing the neighborhood kids in their yards, or out riding their bikes, and throwing the football in the yard, etc. Unfortunately, we also sometimes see young children wandering around the streets alone, or left unattended in vehicles.

Default Air Force Logo Taking ownership and accountability for your actions
If someone asked any other First Sergeant how many times they have heard this, they probably would start to smile. They smile because it is what we as First Sergeants hear on a routine basis. However, I learned two important things way before I joined the military over twenty years ago, and if we, as Airmen, abide by these, most of these comments I mentioned above would not exist. The two things I would like to talk about are ownership and accountability.

Default Air Force Logo Suicide Prevention, Stoplights, and the Purple Hippopotamus
Years ago during an Air Force Professional Military Education, I once saw a memory demonstration about how peculiar phrases could get “sticky” and take hold in your memory. The phrase used in the class was “purple hippopotamus”, and I’ve involuntarily remembered the phrase ever since. By itself, it’s a useless image; but if you tie it to something useful, it might save a life.

Earth Day is April 22, 2017. On that day, we will celebrate the earth and our beautiful surroundings in our great outdoor playground, Colorado. Every year, we find new ways to restore the earth’s beauty and preserve its natural resources.

I would like to take a moment to remind Airmen to keep the mission in mind as the Air Force observes the 47th annual Earth Day April 22, 2017. The Air Force’s theme for Earth Day 2017 is: Conserve Today. Secure Tomorrow.
