POW/MIA
Senior leaders from the 21st Space Wing embark on a 24-hour POW/MIA run Sept. 20 beginning at the Vosler NCO Academy. The Airmen ran the flag one lap around base before handing the flag off to another team. Peterson service members will continue running the flag in shifts for 24 hours, culminating at the POW/MIA ceremony Sept. 21 at the base chapel. CMAFS 721st SFS
Senior Airmen Adam Rodgers (left) and Carlos Amaya, 721st Security Forces Squadron, patrol Cheyenne Mountain State Park during the Waldo Canyon fire. The 721st SFS Airmen are concerned not only with threats to the security and safety within the perimeter of the installation, but also the areas bordering the perimeter, called the base security zone. The threat of a wildfire breaking out in the state park, essentially the doorstep of CMAFS, was deemed high, leading to the patrols. (U.S. Air Force photo)

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – Peterson Air and Space Museum docent Gus Freyer shows visitors from the 55th Wing Association reunion around the airpark Sept. 8, 2012. The 55th Wing Association hosted a reunion this year in Colorado Springs and drew members representing more than 20 states, including pilots, mechanics, navigators, Airmen and their family members. The 55th Wing, the Fightin’ Fifty-Fifth, activated Jan. 15, 1941, at Hamilton Field, Calif. The wing was the first P-38 unit in the European theater and primarily a reconnaissance unit from the mid 1940s until the late 1990s. Currently the 55th Wing’s missions execute more diverse flying operations. The 55th Wing is now located at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., and is Air Combat Command’s largest wing. Waldo Canyon fire
Lt. Col. Roger Sherman, 16th Space Control Squadron commander, accepts a certificate of recognition Aug. 28 from Scott Hente, Colorado Springs city council president, on behalf of the 21st Space Wing for volunteer efforts related to the Waldo Canyon fire recovery. Volunteers from more than two dozen area military organizations volunteered more than 1,300 hours as part of the recovery, helping with trash removal, traffic control, working with Army Corps of Engineers in making a sand bagging video for future natural disasters, and debris removal from destroyed homes. The fire broke out June 23 west of Manitou Springs, and over the course of several days spread north and east, burning into Colorado Springs, destroying 346 homes. At the peak of the fire, more than 35,000 residents, including many military families, were evacuated from their homes. (U.S. Air Force photo/Lea Johnson)
