PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Linda Cook, 21st Comptroller Squadron budget analyst, obligates funds as part of the end of year buying Sept. 30. The comptroller squadron is responsible for executing purchase requirements from its initialization until funds are obligated in the Defense Finance and Accounting System. Airmen and civilians worked into the night - some until 3 a.m. Oct. 1 - to capitalize on end of year funding for the wing. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – Burke Ferrin, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron assistant chief for fire prevention, escorts four-year-old twins Leo and Chloe Morales, son and daughter of Tech. Sgt. Leo Morales, 721st Communications Squadron, through the Surrey Fire Safety House on display Oct. 3 at the base exchange to promote National Fire Prevention Week. The safety house is a compact replica of a home used by fire prevention experts to instruct children on the finer points of home fire prevention. The day’s events and displays also featured an appearance by Sparky the Fire Dog, the National Fire Protection Association’s Mascot; a fire truck display; fire extinguisher training; an education table; and a bouncy fire truck for toddlers. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Airmen rush past the starting point during the Combined Federal Campaign Awareness Run Sept. 29. Organized by Les Stewart, 21st Force Support Squadron, and Stephanie Edquid, 21st Space Wing Local Federal Coordinating Committee, the 5K run began and ended at the base fitness center. The 45 participants were rewarded with free ice cream and CFC T-shirts. The CFC is the only authorized solicitation of employees in the federal government workplace on behalf of charitable organizations, and the 21st SW’s fundraising goal this year is $248,000. Airmen from the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Division responded to a Denver suburb Sept. 28 to defuse a live grenade found among the property of a recently deceased World War II veteran. The response was at the request of the Arapahoe County Bomb Squad and part of Peterson's mutual aid agreement with area emergency responders. While responding or diffusing ordnance, EOD members wear suits than can weigh as much as 75 pounds. (Air Force photo by Roberta McDonald)

Stephen Whiting, 21st Space Wing commander and Airman Kurt Brockhaus, 561st Network Operations Squadron, cut the Air Force birthday cake during the U.S. Air Force’s 62nd birthday celebration Sept. 18 at the Aragon Dining Facility. The event featured a lunch, the cake cutting ceremony, and a short presentation on the history of Peterson from Jeff Nash, Peterson Air and Space Museum deputy director and curator. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Col. Stephen Whiting, 21st Space Wing commander, passes the POW/MIA flag to Master Sgt. Lance Thibault, 50th Space Wing, completing the first leg of the 24-hour POW/MIA run Sept. 17. Chief Master Sgt. Tim Omdal, 21st SW command chief, and Capt. Paul Scheglov, 21st SW executive officer, accompanied Colonel Whiting on the first leg of the run. The wing hosted several events during the week, including a reveille ceremony, the run and a candlelight vigil.
