Staff Sgt. Amy Bogue, 21st Medical Support Squadron medical laboratory craftsman, secures blood samples before placing them in the centrifuge machine May 19 in Peterson’s medical laboratory. The centrifuge is used to separate blood cells from plasma. Sergeant Bogue was on-hand during the 21st Medical Group’s May 5 and May 6 College of American Pathologists inspection where inspectors scrutinized more than 2,600 checklists and found only one minor discrepancy. Shante Shinholster, 21st Medical Support Squadron medical laboratory technician, wrap parafilm around a cytology specimen container May 19 in Peterson’s medical laboratory. Parafilm is a thin material lab technicians use to protect and seal specimen containers that, due to weather changes, may expand or contract. Ms. Shinholster was on-hand during the 21st Medical Group’s May 5 and May 6 College of American Pathologists inspection where inspectors scrutinized more than 2,600 checklists and found only one minor discrepancy. Lt. Col. Tracy Witcher, 21st Mission Support Group deputy commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Cynthia Solomito, 21st MSG superintendent, cut the Airmen Appreciation Day cake during the AAP day event at the Aragon Dining Facility May 8. The purpose of AAP was to give public thanks to Peterson Airmen for their tireless efforts toward launching and employing space power for the 21st Century.

Wildfire Academy

Firefighters participating in the Wildfire Academy, hosted by the 721st Civil Engineer fire department, dig a fire line or “stop line” at Fort Carson during a training exercise. Stop lines are fire control measures designed to cut off a wildfire before it spreads. Approximately 100 enlisted and civilian fire fighters from Peterson, Cheyenne Mountain and other local federal, state and local agencies took part in the week-long training academy which culminated with a 100 acre live fire exercise conducted at Fort Carson and was designed to promote first responder teamwork. Three Ponderosa Pine trees were planted in commemoration of Arbor Day, April 24. Peterson was consecutively designated Tree City USA for the 15th year and received the eighth Tree City USA Growth Award for increasing the number and density of trees. Staff Sgt. Misty Horton, 21st Space Wing Aerospace Medicine Squadron,and COlorado Springs School District 11 and 49 kindergarten through fourth grade children plant seeds for a greener community at the Richard P. Lee Youth Center May 1. The spicy herb plant seedlings are a part of the Go Grow Green initiative’s adopt-a-plant program. Peterson civilian and active duty personnel may choose a plant in June at the center. During summer 2009, the center will also maintain a small garden in the playground area.
