Airman 1st Class Shelby Manuelito, 21st Force Support Squadron, reads to kindergartners March 8, in Tina Ferguson’s class at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Colorado Springs School District 11. Peterson Air Force Base recently launched an “Adopt A School” program where Airmen and civilians can volunteer in area schools. District 11 school officials say there are endless volunteer opportunities for Airmen to be mentors, readers, lunch buddies and more. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Col. Stephen N. Whiting, 21st Space Wing commander, presents the 21st Mission Support Group guidon to Col. Kimerlee Conner, who assumed command of the 21st MSG March 10 during a change of command ceremony. Colonel Conner comes to Peterson from the Pentagon. As the 21st MSG commander, she will oversee the communications squadron, civil engineering, contracting, logistics, personnel, security and services support to wing mission partners and 21st SW units operating worldwide to execute their missile warning, missle defense and space control missions. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – Staff Sgt. Darlene Tydingco, 21st Comptroller Squadron, noncommissioned officer in-charge of special actions, was selected for this week's First Knight award. Sergeant Tydingco is from Umatac, Guam and had served in the Air Force for 4 years. This award is designed to recognize outstanding Airmen each week for the work they do every day.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Col. Stephen N. Whiting, 21st Space Wing commander, describes women’s contribution to the U.S. Air Force during his remarks March 2, at the base exchange, marking the start of Women’s History Month. The Women’s History Month committee will host a Women’s Fitness Fair at the Peterson Fitness and Sports Center, Building 560 on March 24. The star of TV show “American Gladiators” Tanji Johnson will teach a one-hour “Gladiator Boot Camp” class at noon. Ms. Johnson is an International Federation of Body Builders professional. 21st Security Forces Squadron Airmen detain a suspect Feb. 23 in the 21st Space Wing Headquarters Building 845 as part of the quarterly Condor Crest exercise. The suspect began a shooting spree in Eagle Park and then ran into the headquarters building. The four-day exercise simulated active shooters on Peterson Air Force Base and was designed to test building lockdown, medical and fire response and security forces reaction time. Condor Crest exercises also help ensure the 21st SW is able to complete its mission of professionally operating, supporting and protecting its personnel and resources during actual incidents. During the 21st Space Wing Condor Crest exercise, 21st Security Forces Squadron Airmen detain a shooting suspect (left) Feb. 25 in the wooded area behind the Peterson Shoppette. The active shooting scenario was part of the wing’s quarterly exercise. In this scenario, the gunman fired into a crowd of Airmen and civilians who had just evacuated Air Force Space Headquarters Building 1, near the north gate. The gunman was tackled and then removed from the parking lot to the wooded area by security forces. Condor Crest exercises also help ensure the 21st SW is able to complete its mission of professionally operating, supporting and protecting its personnel and resources during actual incidents.
