Airman helps Iraqi family to safety in U.S.

Vincent Talia (center), holds the hand of his wife Nouras, after their wedding anniversary attended by Master Sgt. Greg Jensen (far right) recently. Sergeant Jensen worked with Mr. Talia, an Iraqi citizen who escaped Iraq with the help of the master sergeant, while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom during 2006. In an interview about helping Mr. Talia and his family to the U.S., Sergeant Jensen said, "I really felt like I owed him. He saved my life." Senior Airman Zalman Kosofsky, 21st Aerospace Medical Squadron bioenvironmental engineering journeyman, was awarded for being selected as the John Levitow award receipient in Airman Leadership School Class 08-5, placing number one out of 31 students. Airman Kosofsky also acted as the chemical, biological, readiness and nuclear exercise first responder, providing commanders with anthrax hazard date, influcing command and control decisions. Tech. Sgt. Michael E. Scott, 6th Space Warning Squadron NCO in charge of security forces operations, was awarded for coordinating $91,000 of fiber optic and camera projects, more than doubling threat detection beyond the Protection Level One corridor. Sergeant Scott also organized two, 10-hour joint live fire/intruder training events with the Department of Homeland Security, giving 28 security forces members lifelike tactics training. He also guided his squadron through the 2008 Environmental, Safety, Occupational Health, Compliance program, preparing five facilities and 28 personnel for the week long inspection, resulting in minor safety write ups. Eugene J. Ondechek, Jr., 21st Contracting Squadron contract specialist, was awarded for negotiating 18 orders worth $500,000, saving more than $50,000 with 30 days average versus 60 day norm. Mr. Ondechek also resolved a building boiler/chiller maintenance contract in less than 30 days, ensuring occupant comfort and health was assured and also averted 11 facility closures. He also contracted $180,000 new 21st Space Wing Command Section furniture contract, completing three weeks early for delivery before commander's need date. He also resolved an aquatics center diving board parts mix-up, ensuring proper equipment bought in two days -- a huge Peterson quality of life boost. (U.S. Air Force photo)

Scott A. Deeds, 721st Security Forces Squadron Chief of Plans and Programs, was awarded for being an installation expert for classified material management -- program was benchmarked at the Cavalier Air Force Station, N.D., Information Security office. Mr. Deeds also managed a visitor database in excess of 3,500 personnel for Cheyenne Mountain AFS, Colo., ensuring flawless accountability to ensure base safety. He also conducted Information security program reviews, ensuring unit commander's policy and program effectiveness.
