THULE AIR BASE, Greenland -- The Ocean Giant waits in the bay for tanker operations to finish, while the Rising Star, the Air Force’s only pusher boat, motors through the bay. The Rising Star helped position cargo ships into and out of Thule’s port during Operation Pacer Goose, Thule’s annual resupply mission. Thule is located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle and is home to the northernmost deep water port in the world. THULE AIR BASE, Greenland – Icebergs float on the horizon as 821st Air Base Group Airmen hold a polar bear swim Aug. 4 and 26 at the Thule AB Tug Boat Beach. The air temperature was 51 degrees, while the water was a scant 41 degrees. "It was a really unique experience,” said a chilled Staff Sgt. Neal Thompson, 821st Air Base Group Knowledge Operations Management. “It was definitely something that a lot of people are unable to do,” he said referring to his newly-earned title of Polar Bear. THULE AIR BASE, Greenland -- Airmen at Thule Air Base wrap gifts Nov. 11 as part of Operation Julemand, a local humanitarian mission organized and supported by Team Thule personnel to purchase and give Christmas gifts to Greenlandic children in four local villages. Gifts are purchased from the generous donations of the Airmen, Danes, Canadians and Greenlanders stationed at Thule AB. About 100 volunteers wrapped about 140 gifts which will be distributed in December. New exhaust boilers at Thule Air Base take the excess heat from the electrical generators and use it to heat the base. The new boilers will save the base $3 million a year and 1.5 million gallons of fuel. THULE AIR BASE, Greenland -- The Thule Air Base Rising 6 group, made up of Airmen ranks E-1 to E-6, hosted the Thule 2011 Amazing Race Sept. 5. The race consisted of four-person teams completing a series of 12 challenges or tasks around base, including bowling, climbing the 700-foot Mount Dundas, creating a 30-second music video and more. Awards were presented and recognition given to the top three finishers. “Team Alpha Super Awesome Cool Dynamite Wolf Squadron,” made up of Airmen from the security forces squadron, came in second place finishing in a little more than six hours. Team “Big Bird,” comprised of Thule Air Base senior leaders, came in first with a total time of just under five hours. (Courtesy photo)

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland – A polar bear prowls Thule Air Base Sept. 14, 2011. Bears are not an uncommon sight at Thule, located 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle, as they dominate their high ground foraging for food. The air base has a warning system in place to alert residents if a bear is nearby, as well as tools to discourage the bears from venturing onto base.
