The mission of the 20th Space Control Squadron (20 SPCS) is to execute multiplatform, tactical space warfighting domain characterization, recognition, and responsiveness to achieve 21st Space Wing and United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) intent. 20 SPCS uses a global network of near-earth and deep-space weapons systems to conduct space object identification and provide targetable intelligence in support of Space Situational Awareness and space domain control.
The approximately 250-member 24/7 squadron, consists of military and civilian Airmen, as well as contracted mission partners, operating and maintaining five weapon systems across six geographically-separated locations: the AN/FPS-85 phased array radar at Site C-6, Eglin AFB, FL; three Ground-Based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance (GEODSS) sensors located at White Sands Missile Range, Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, and the Maui Space Surveillance Complex; and the US Air Force Space Fence at Redstone Arsenal and US Army Garrison - Kwajalein Atoll.
20 SPCS has the preponderance of Department of Defense Space Situational Awareness assets, and is able to find, fix, track, and target manmade objects in Earth’s orbit, ranging from a softball-sized object 7,000 kilometers away to an object the size of a basketball 40,000 kilometers away. 20 SPCS has a robust, in-garrison intelligence section that fuses multi-source data into 20 SPCS operations, mission planning, and assessment for benign (e.g. space debris) and hostile targets in support of national security interests.
