Space Observer: Back by popular demand!

PETERSON AFB, Colo. -- We all know we have to work smarter not harder in today's Air Force. It is a phrase you have heard many times before and it is part of our Air Force culture.

In accordance with this philosophy, we have been streamlining everyday processes across the Air Force, and Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century is a program focused on continuing these types of transformations. AFSO21 allows for better allocation of resources through optimizing processes.

In October 2006, as an AFSO21 initiative to compensate for our resource constraints, we were forced to discontinue the Space Observer. For the past six months, the Colorado Springs Military Newspaper Group published the Space Guardian. The Space Guardian did a great job filling this void, but it just wasn't our Space Observer.

Due to popular demand and Airmen ingenuity and creative solutions...the Space Observer is back! We were able to develop a cooperative partnership with the Space Guardian's publisher, to resurrect the traditional base paper that had been a mainstay on Peterson for the past 50 years. Now, the publisher, Colorado Springs Military Newspaper Group, staffs, manages and produces the paper while 21 SW Public Affairs provides content. This partnership saves the wing more than 80 man hours a week allowing PA to focus on developing and communicating the messages of our senior leaders; this is truly an example of what AFSO21 is pushing for and what a little Airmen ingenuity can accomplish.

Our official web site, www.peterson.af.mil, continues to be an up-to-date source, providing the key Team Pete information. Web use has been up each month and I encourage all of you to take advantage of this site, while also enjoying the convenience of the on-the-go hard copy paper.

I continue to challenge each of you to support the Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Air Force's initiative, AFSO21, and find ways to make a difference, whether it is eliminating processes that are no longer necessary or streamlining those that are necessary. Present process improvement ideas up through your chain of command and personally be an integral part of saving the nation.
